The following case studies show some of the many ways Relocity has helped clients solve their unique relocation challenges.

Case #1

Client

A consumer electronics executive, his physician wife, their three kids and a pet Shar Pei were immigrating to Los Angeles from Hong Kong.

Objectives

  • The family preferred a suburban environment, but the father would be working in downtown L.A.
  • The family would primarily be purchasing new furniture in Los Angeles
  • Although the father had a green card, the wife and kids needed to establish legal status
  • The family wanted to send their kids to top-rated private schools
  • The family had no familiarity with American utility companies and other essential services.
  • The family needed to buy a car and acquire drivers licenses, registration and insurance.
  • The family enjoys having cultural events and museums nearby.
  • The older daughter needed a piano teacher, the son wanted swimming lessons, and the youngest daughter needed a nanny
  • The parents wanted to be near Chinese cultural resources so that their children would retain an appreciation and connection to their ancestral heritage.
  • The pet Shar Pei had a tendency to be aggressive and needed a yard to exercise in.

Solution

Relocity chose San Marino as the perfect neighborhood for several reasons: A) a wide selection of gracious homes in a suburban setting, B) an easy commute to downtown LA by car or train, C) proximity to Pasadena, home of world-class museums and a symphony orchestra, D) top-rated private schools nearby, and E) proximity to Monterey Park, a community with a large Chinese population and many Asian cultural resources.

The Personal Host aided the family in acquiring:

  • A real estate agent specializing in San Marino, who found them a 5-bedroom home
  • An immigration attorney
  • Discounts at several furniture stores averaging 10-20% off their purchases
  • Utility connections, including being present for appointments so the family did not have to wait
  • Piano lessons for the older daughter at the LA College of Music in Pasadena (rated one of the top 20 music conservatories in the U.S.)
  • Swimming lessons for the son at the Rose Bowl Acquatic Center in Pasadena
  • A nanny for the youngest daughter, including researching and interviewing candidates
  • A contractor to install a doggie door and perimeter fence for the Shar Pei to play

Case #2

Client

A systems analyst was being transferred from New York City to Los Angeles along with her husband, a tech entrepreneur. She would be working at offices in Playa del Rey.

Objectives

  • The wife’s employer, an investment bank, provided her with package of 20 hours with Relocity.
  • The bank wanted the wife to be at work in L.A. within 30 days, so time was a factor.
  • The husband is originally from California, so the couple did not require general orientation.
  • The couple wanted a rental home with character in a quiet neighborhood.
  • The couple is physically active and loves outdoor sports. The husband wanted surfing lessons.
  • They also enjoy an active nightlife and have an interest in fashion and modern art.
  • The couple would be bringing a majority of their own furniture, but needed help fitting it into their new space, as well as supplementing with new pieces.
  • With busy schedules, the couple needed help taking care of the home once moved-in.

Solution

Based on the Initial Interview, Relocity recommended a Personal Host familiar with South Bay real estate. On their brief scouting visit, the Personal Host showed the couple the Venice canal neighborhood, close to Playa del Rey, and they loved it because of the unique charm. Venice is also close to “Silicon Beach”, which is conducive to the husband’s tech start-up. Venice is home to exciting nightlife, including the edgy Abbot-Kinney neighborhood, famous for its “food trucks” and arts festivals.

The Personal Host helped provide:

  • A broker who helped find and negotiate the lease on an ideal rental home
  • Guidance arranging and acquiring furniture, including visiting the home several times to measure spaces, create floorplans, and take photos
  • Assistance on moving day, including managing and guiding the moving company staff
  • Handling cable and electricity hook-ups
  • Since the couple was familiar with LA, they did not need to use their company-supplied Relocity hours on general tours or orientation. So, they used their Personal Host for things they really desired, like finding a housekeeper, dry-cleaner, physical trainer, hair stylist, and surfing lessons for the husband at nearby Venice Beach.

Case #3

Client

An animator was moving to Los Angeles from Atlanta to pursue his career.

Objectives

  • Client had been to Los Angeles several times and had friends living in West Hollywood, so he knew already that he wanted to live there.
  • Client’s income required that his rent be reasonable, even if West Hollywood is one of the most expensive areas of Los Angeles.
  • He had searched online but all the properties were either too expensive or not appealing.
  • Client did not want to consider a sale or long-term lease because he wanted to test the waters in Los Angeles before making a commitment.
  • He was bringing his pet Cavalier King Charles terrier, so he needed a pet-friendly building
  • Client wanted to find classes in painting and photography.
  • Client is a fitness enthusiast and needed a place to train.
  • Client is also a vegan and wanted access to vegan markets and restaurants.

Solution

Relocity recommended a Personal Host who had lived in West Hollywood for 15 years and knew the area intimately. The Host and Client agreed that the Host would search for one of the smaller buildings where apartments are for rent-by-owner. The Host found an unlisted apartment by driving through the neighborhood (which the Client could have never done long-distance) and finding a “For Rent” sign on an older building with lots of character that accepted small pets.

A week before the moving van was scheduled to arrive, the Personal Host went to West Hollywood City Hall to acquire a permit to block public parking spaces on the street in front of the building, posted notification signs, and notified the police department (all of which is required by the City of West Hollywood).

The Personal Host also helped the Client find:

  • A doggy day-care facility nearby
  • Adult art classes at Barnsdall Park Art Center in nearby Hollywood
  • Unique fitness classes at Crunch gym
  • Several restaurants and markets featuring vegan options
  • Nightclubs and bars of interest to the Client
